Bantul – Two students from MTsN 6 Bantul proudly participated in the macapat competition for junior high school level as part of the Islamic Mataram Axis Festival. The event took place at the Pleret Village Hall on Saturday (September 20, 2025), drawing participants from various schools and madrasahs across Bantul. Their performance not only demonstrated artistic talent but also reflected a strong commitment to preserving Javanese culture while boosting self-confidence in public.
This year’s Islamic Mataram Axis Festival highlighted a wide range of traditional arts and cultural activities rooted in local wisdom. Among the competitions, macapat stood out as a prestigious contest that tested students’ ability to interpret and sing classical Javanese poems with proper rhythm, intonation, and meaning. The involvement of MTsN 6 Bantul students in such an event was seen as an invaluable opportunity to deepen their appreciation of cultural heritage while honing their artistic expression.
The macapat tradition itself carries deep philosophical and moral values, often conveying life lessons through poetic verses. By engaging in this competition, the students were not only performing but also learning about the spiritual and ethical dimensions embedded in Javanese literature. This experience enriched their understanding of how traditional art can continue to serve as a medium of character education in modern times.
MTsN 6 Bantul Principal, Sugiyono, expressed his full support for the students’ participation. “The involvement of MTsN 6 Bantul students in traditional art competitions like macapat is not merely about winning. It is a concrete effort to preserve Javanese culture among the younger generation,” he emphasized. He added that he hopes the students will perform their best, bring pride to the school, and carry forward noble values through their artistic journey.
Through this event, MTsN 6 Bantul reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing both academic excellence and cultural literacy among its students. The participation in the macapat competition not only elevated the school’s profile but also demonstrated how educational institutions can play a vital role in safeguarding cultural traditions. As the Islamic Mataram Axis Festival concluded, the presence of young performers like those from MTsN 6 Bantul gave renewed hope that Javanese heritage will continue to thrive across generations.
