Sidoarjo – On Sunday, September 7, 2025, the 2025 Community Service Program (KKN-T) Team from Muhammadiyah University of Sidoarjo (Umsida) Group 03 presented a culinary innovation in the form of catfish nuggets with the PKK RT 03 women from Kedurus Hamlet, Kepatihan Village, Tulangan District. This program aims to educate the public that catfish dishes do not have to be limited to frying or marinating, but can be processed into modern dishes that are more practical and have high sales value.
According to Yakob, Head of Umsida Community Service Program Group 03, the catfish nugget innovation was chosen for its high nutritional content and potential to increase the economic value of local livestock. “Catfish can be processed into more modern and practical nuggets. Besides being rich in nutrition, this product also increases the selling price, making local catfish farming more profitable,” he explained.
This activity was held in front of the Kedurus Hamlet multipurpose building located next to the At-Taubah Mosque. The KKN-T students not only provided outreach but also directly demonstrated how to make nuggets, from processing the catfish, making the dough, to frying them. Throughout the process, residents were actively involved, one of whom was Mrs. Susjiati who helped with the frying. “It’s really cool, the KKN-T students’ knowledge is very useful for the Kedurus residents. We can practice directly and see the results,” he said.
Enthusiasm also came from the PKK women, who appeared to be intently observing the activity. According to Ibu Umi, Head of the PRA (Practice for the Kedurus Hamlet) community, many residents raise catfish at home, but some find managing them cumbersome. “With this innovation in catfish nuggets, livestock products can have a higher selling value and not be wasted. Furthermore, these nuggets are a solution for children who don’t like eating catfish directly, but still get the nutrition they need,” she said.
This activity not only provided new experiences for the PKK mothers but also opened up new business opportunities in the culinary field. Catfish nuggets are considered a potential alternative micro-enterprise that can be produced independently by residents. According to Adel, the coordinator of this work program, “I am very happy to be able to channel ideas and share innovations with the residents of Kedurus, especially the PKK mothers of RT 03. We hope that these catfish nugget-making skills can be truly utilized, even becoming a new livelihood in the future.”

The KKN-T team also encouraged wider marketing of the catfish nuggets, for example by consigning them to school canteens, Muhammadiyah supermarkets, or local culinary stalls around Tulangan. With the right distribution and packaging strategies, catfish nuggets have the potential to become a superior village product, not only increasing family income but also boosting the economic independence of the Kedurus community.
Hope for the Future
This innovation has received a positive response from residents due to its simplicity, nutritional value, and economic value. Umsida Community Service Program students hope this program won’t stop with the community service program but can continue as a sustainable endeavor. Catfish nuggets are expected to become a new culinary icon for Kedurus Hamlet, demonstrating that local potential can be developed with a touch of creativity.
