The history of Library Visit Day began with a proposal from Mastini Hardjoprakoso, the first Head of the National Library of Indonesia. The proposal was conveyed through letter Number 020/A1/VIII/1995 to President Soeharto on August 11, 1995. It was then established that starting in 1995, every September 14 would be commemorated as Library Visit Day. The main goal is to cultivate the habit of visiting libraries and to increase public interest in reading, while strengthening the role of libraries as centers of knowledge and literacy.
On the commemoration of Library Visit Day on September 14, 2025, the de’Talenta Library brightened its life skill area with colorful literacy umbrella decorations. The vibrant umbrellas were strung across wires connecting the library to the classrooms, symbolizing the diversity of stories and knowledge that can be found in every book. This creative touch also became a magnet for the community, especially children and students, to visit the library, explore its book collection, and participate in special literacy events prepared for the day.
In his remarks at the event held at de’Talenta Lib, Head of MTsN 6 Bantul Sugiyono encouraged all members of the school community—students, teachers, and parents—to make literacy not merely a formal activity, but an integral part of daily life. According to Sugiyono, “we do not read only to pass exams, but we read, think, and then actualize ourselves to become truly literate individuals—capable of thinking critically, creatively, and contributing to society.” He added that the colorful umbrellas symbolize the diversity of thought and the beauty of knowledge derived from various reading sources (16/09/25).
Despite the high enthusiasm from the community, Sugiyono admitted that challenges remain: the limited collection of new books, restricted library operating hours, and a lack of supporting facilities such as comfortable reading spaces or digital access. However, he remains optimistic that moments like Library Visit Day can trigger real change. He expressed hope that the de’Talenta Library will continue to grow as a center of creativity and literacy, not merely a place to “borrow books,” but as a space where ideas, dialogue, and self-actualization flourish among its literate citizens.
