Badung, January 2026 — International students from Germany joined an educational excursion to a local chocolate factory in Bali to learn about chocolate production, explore Indonesia’s cacao industry, and take part in a hands-on chocolate-making workshop.
The excursion was part of an academic program from Universitas Dhyana Pura designed to support learning outside the classroom. Students were introduced to the chocolate production process and learned that the factory uses locally sourced cacao beans from Bali, Sumatra, and Sulawesi. The activity also aimed to show how local food products are developed and marketed within a tourism context.
“My main purpose was to enjoy time together with my classmates and to try making chocolate myself,” said Lara Kratzer, an international tourism management student. She added that the workshop helped her understand the creative side of the food and beverage industry, especially how interactive activities can engage visitors.
During the visit, students were guided by factory staff and participated directly in the chocolate-making process. They learned basic steps such as melting chocolate, mixing ingredients, and adding fillings and toppings. According to the staff, the hands-on activity is the most attractive part for visitors, particularly international guests.
“Besides enjoying chocolate, we want visitors to have an experience by creating their own chocolate,” said Widia, a staff member at the factory. She explained that many international visitors enjoy the workshop because it allows them to be directly involved in the process. Widia also noted that all chocolate used in the factory is made from Indonesian cacao, with quality control carried out both at the main factory in Sumatra and the mini factory in Bali.
The excursion also provided social and cultural benefits. Students said the activity helped strengthen interaction among international classmates and created a relaxed learning atmosphere outside the classroom. It also offered insight into experiential tourism and customer engagement in the food and beverage sector.
The chocolate factory welcomed the visit and said activities like this help promote Indonesian chocolate to international audiences. The company hopes such programs will raise awareness of Indonesia’s potential as a cacao-producing country and support the development of local chocolate brands.
