Efforts to preserve Javanese culture do not always have to rely on textbooks and memorization. This was demonstrated by Grade VIII students of MTsN 6 Bantul, who participated in watching a wayang (traditional puppet) performance as part of their learning process and character development. The activity, held on Monday, February 2, 2026, became a meaningful and enjoyable learning experience for the students.
Wayang is not merely a form of entertainment, but also a source of guidance rich in moral values, philosophy, and local wisdom. Through traditional wayang stories, students were introduced to characters that reflect honesty, bravery, loyalty, and responsibility. The values conveyed in the performance were considered highly relevant to students’ daily lives, both within the madrasah environment and in society.
During the performance, Grade VIII students of MTsN 6 Bantul showed great enthusiasm as they followed the storyline and dialogues delivered by the dalang (puppet master). Some students even began to recognize the characters and understand the messages embedded in the stories. The activity opened opportunities for discussion and reflection on the meaning of the stories and their relevance to modern life.
Imam Bibit, the Javanese language teacher at MTsN 6 Bantul, explained that watching wayang performances serves as a contextual learning strategy to preserve Javanese culture. “In addition to introducing cultural heritage, watching wayang performances also fosters a sense of pride in our ancestral legacy. Amid the strong influence of globalization and modern popular culture, wayang serves as a reminder for students of the richness of local culture that must be protected and preserved,” he explained.
Through this activity, Grade VIII students of MTsN 6 Bantul were not only spectators but also learners of culture. It is hoped that the experience of watching wayang will cultivate a love for traditional Javanese arts and encourage the younger generation to continue preserving them.
Simple efforts such as watching wayang performances represent concrete steps in safeguarding cultural identity. When students are introduced to culture from an early age, the heritage of Javanese culture will remain alive and relevant in the future. (imb/ewh)
