The atmosphere of science learning in Class IX B at MTsN 6 Bantul appeared different from usual. Students took part in a practicum on acid and base testing using a natural turmeric indicator with great enthusiasm and excitement.
In this activity, students were divided into eight small groups to conduct simple experiments. Various materials easily found in the surrounding environment were used as test objects, including vinegar, lime juice, baking soda, laundry bleach, and detergent. Each substance was dripped with the turmeric indicator solution to observe color changes indicating acidic or basic properties.
The science teacher, Joko Setiawan, explained that the use of a turmeric indicator was intentionally chosen to help students better understand acid–base concepts through direct experience.
“With a turmeric indicator, students can clearly see the color changes that occur. This turns out to make it easier for them to understand the material and become much more enthusiastic,” he said.
Throughout the activity, students appeared joyful as they observed the color reactions produced by each substance. Group discussions ran actively, showing a high level of student engagement in the learning process.
The Head of MTsN 6 Bantul, Sugiyono, expressed his appreciation for the innovative learning approach implemented by the science teacher.
“Contextual learning like this is excellent because it directly involves students. In addition to improving conceptual understanding, this activity also fosters curiosity and joy in learning in the classroom,” he remarked.
Through this learning activity, students are expected not only to understand acid and base concepts theoretically but also to relate them to everyday life. A joyful and interactive learning atmosphere thus becomes an important asset in improving the quality of science education at MTsN 6 Bantul. (Jks/ewh)
