Bantul (MTsN 6 Bantul)—The atmosphere at de’Talenta Library of MTsN 6 Bantul looked different on Tuesday, February 3, 2026. Around 60 students were immersed in a warm and cheerful English learning session as they had the opportunity to converse directly with a native speaker from abroad. This activity became a valuable experience, allowing students to practice a foreign language in an enjoyable and communicative setting.
The native speaker present was Serge Nanda, a native speaker from Senegal, Africa. With his friendly and interactive approach, Serge invited students to engage in simple dialogues in English. The students appeared cheerful and enthusiastic throughout each conversation session. Initial feelings of shyness gradually turned into confidence as they began to speak, ask questions, and respond directly in a foreign language.
Through this activity, students not only learned vocabulary and pronunciation but also developed greater self-confidence in communication. The two-way interaction made the English learning atmosphere come alive. Students felt both challenged and motivated as they were able to use English in a real context with a native speaker.
Adding to the excitement, the session concluded with a group singing activity using the Interactive Flat Panel (IFP) facility available in the library. English songs were played, and students joined in enthusiastically. This combination of technology and interactive learning truly transformed the library into an inspiring and enjoyable learning space.
The Head of MTsN 6 Bantul, Sugiyono, expressed his gratitude for the visit of Serge Nanda and hoped that similar activities could continue to be held to improve students’ foreign language competencies. The accompanying teacher, Ely Widayati, also gave her appreciation to Serge, who is not only a native speaker but also proficient in five languages—English, French, Indonesian, Senegalese, and Spanish. According to him, the presence of such a multilingual figure serves as a unique inspiration for students to keep learning and dare to dream beyond global boundaries. (ewh)
