What A Student Says About Their Building and Facilities Conditions

Being provided with great facilities and a comfortable environment is what most college students would always ask for. Having those aforementioned things will help them to learn better. Not only that, but an equal and sustained development of each room in college buildings is important as well. Students will not need to move from one class to another just to find a room with an air conditioner that works or a room with a decent LCD projector to support their lecture. It is not rare for students to encounter such situations, and some might have had to conduct the lecture activities through online meeting platforms as a result. This, obviously, affects the students’ and lecturers’ learning activities.

Elis, one of the students in the Japanese Language Education 2023 study program at Universitas Negeri Semarang, mentioned that the facilities in the B4, B9, and B11 buildings are more or less the same as those in other faculties’ buildings. Those three buildings are apparently where Japanese Language Education students and lecturers hold lectures. The WIFI provided for students is decent enough within the three buildings, even though they cannot use it from the B4 building’s toilet.  Elis also mentioned that some air conditioners and LCD Projectors in the B9 building are not in good condition. According to Elis, Aid from the faculty has been provided, including replacing a broken glassboard, installing smart televisions in the B4 and B11 buildings to replace LCD projectors, and fixing broken door handles. However, Elis also addressed the lack of trash bins in the buildings, which requires her to make an effort to find one. “As a request, I would want to ask for better facilities for the B9 building, especially the toilets. The toilets’ conditions in the B9 building can be improved further for the sake of the students, and adding clothes hooks inside those toilets would be nice,” said Elis when she asked what request she would make as a student to the faculty.

From the interview with Elis, even though we are informed that the conditions regarding facilities and buildings in B4, B9, and B11 buildings are much the same, it is still very unfortunate that the B9 building receives less attention. The B9 building is often used for art exhibitions on the first floor, and student classes are on the third floor. The fact that the development and condition of the buildings are not equal still needs attention from the faculty. Students deserve equal conditions in the facilities and buildings they use, because they have the right to do so.
