Bantul – An Indonesian language teacher at MTsN 6 Bantul, Rina Harwati, introduced the traditional Acehnese song Smong during a lesson on response texts for fiction and non-fiction books by accessing a video on YouTube. The learning process became more engaging because students could immediately hear how the song is sung, rather than just reading the lyrics written in their textbook.
According to Rina, this approach represents a form of contextual learning that brings students closer to real-life experiences. “Students do not only read the lyrics but can also sing them directly following the recording of Acehnese people uploaded on YouTube,” she explained. Through the song, students were encouraged to explore the emotional depth and character of the main figure, Itam, presented in the text.
The students participated enthusiastically in the lesson, particularly those from Class VII D on Wednesday (March 11, 2026). Raisya, a student from the class, happily imitated the song even though she had only heard it once. “I became curious about the lyrics. It turns out that Smong means waves and describes the tsunami that occurred in Aceh. This is my first time hearing it, and the lyrics carry deep meaning,” Raisya commented.
Choosing the right learning media is considered essential to create a lively, meaningful, and enjoyable classroom atmosphere, in line with the innovative spirit promoted at MTsN 6 Bantul. Teachers are encouraged to design learning experiences that spark enthusiasm among students and keep them actively involved.
The head of the madrasah, Sugiyono, expressed his appreciation for the Indonesian language teacher’s creativity. He emphasized that joyful teaching practices help prevent students from feeling bored or sleepy in class. “With a joyful teaching approach, students are always engaged because they are placed in real and meaningful learning situations,” he said.
