Bantul (MTsN 6 Bantul) – Students of Grade 7D at MTsN 6 Bantul engaged in traditional games Gobag Sodor and Ular Naga on Wednesday (September 24, 2025). These games were chosen for their simplicity, fun, and strong educational values. Gobag Sodor trains agility and teamwork, while Ular Naga fosters togetherness, creativity, and joy through movement and singing.

“This activity aligns with the Learning Outcomes (Capaian Pembelajaran/CP) of PE for Phase D at the junior high school level,” explained Ramadhitya E’sha, a student-teacher from Yogyakarta State University (UNY). According to the Ministry of Education guidelines, students are expected to practice specific movement skills in various games and sports, as well as analyze the concepts and procedures involved. Traditional games provide authentic opportunities for students to develop locomotor, non-locomotor, and manipulative movement skills.

Beyond physical skills, traditional games also carry social and cultural dimensions. Gobag Sodor emphasizes sportsmanship, honesty, and adherence to rules, while Ular Naga—passed down through simple songs—teaches values of togetherness. Thus, PE serves not only as a means for physical fitness but also for character building and preserving local culture.

Traditional games also support the principles of deep learning promoted in the Kurikulum Merdeka. Students are trained to think critically, strategize, make quick decisions, and reflect on their playing experiences. This makes learning more meaningful by integrating movement skills, cognitive abilities, and social attitudes.

Sugiyono, Principal of MTsN 6 Bantul, praised the initiative by the student-teacher, E’sha. “By integrating traditional games into PE, teachers support the achievement of Phase D learning outcomes while creating fun, contextual, and character-building lessons,” he affirmed. The activity highlights how PE can nurture students to be healthy, sportsmanlike, culturally grounded, and prepared to face life’s challenges with a positive attitude.
